When Stress Speaks Louder Than Words
Why Smart Conversations Break Down Under Pressure (And What to Do Instead)
Hi
“Put your hands on grip, otherwise I’ll put someone else on it.”
Yeah. That actually happened.
I screenshotted it. Saved it to Notion. Told myself: remember this.
Not to hold a grudge.
Not to gossip.
But to remember what stress sounds like when it masquerades as leadership.
Fast forward a few years
Last week, in my Process Communication masterclass, someone asked:
“Now that you know PCM, what would you say back to that message?”
And I paused.
Truth bomb: I wouldn’t have said a thing. Not in that moment.
Because here’s what I know now:
Stress doesn’t argue. It hijacks.
When stress hits, language stops being logical.
It becomes biology in motion.
People under pressure:
Grab control
Withdraw
Explode
Over-explain
Or go silent
Not because they’re bad humans.
Because their nervous system has already clocked out.
And me? Same story. Back then, I’d have reacted. Spiraled. Played defense.
That Slack message wasn’t really about “hands on grip.”
It was stress leaking into communication.
And if I’d responded from my own stress?
We’d be in a full-blown meltdown loop.
Reflection for this week
Think about a time someone said something sharp at work.
Was it about the content… or the stress behind it?
Where was your nervous system at the moment?
Did your response escalate or diffuse the situation?
Here’s the kicker: most stress communication is invisible — until you notice it.
In yourself. In others. In that awkward pause between what’s said and what’s meant.
Micro-Action: Pause, Breathe, Respond Like a Human
Next time you feel your chest tighten at work:
Stop. Breathe. Seriously. Just 60 seconds.
Label your stress: fight, flight, freeze, please, or control.
Reset. Ground. Move.
Respond after your body decides it’s safe to talk.
Spoiler alert: your words will actually land.
You’ll look calm. Smart. Human. (All good things.)
Why I built this into PCM
We’re taught what to say.
Almost nobody teaches how to be regulated before you say it.
That’s why stress communication is at the core of my Process Communication masterclass.
Because the smartest comeback in the world is useless if your nervous system is screaming.

P.S. That screenshot I deleted, once I let it go:)
I just learned how to respond better than I ever could with words alone.
